    Because of their promise, they remained bound to the Kauravas, whether they were on Dharma or Adharma. Their Dharma was loyalty to the king and the throne.

    Those were the times when great saints like bhishma taught pride and staying true to oneself is the right definition of dharma. Because of that he took the side of Kauravas keeping his promise to protect kingdom. But come on dude. Kingdom is nothing but people. Saving the people should be his first priority rather than working for pride and satisfaction.

    I think it’s now nuanced. Obviously he was very learned and would know more about dharma. But in Mahabharata Arjun has broken his views couple of time , like once for his marriage and I guess once where he almost kills Yudhishthir because Yudhishthir insulted his bow. But he is not reproached for it by anyone. He seemingly did it for greater good or more rationale thought. I guess it’s upto us to select the path.
