GuestThe Puranas present a highly systematic, hierarchical model of time. It begins with the blink of an eye and scales up to the unimaginably vast lifespan of Brahma, the creator. Here is the complete calculation, as revealed in the scriptures.
⏳ The Foundational Units: From a Blink to a Day
The measurement of time begins with the smallest perceptible unit. The Vishnu Purana and Markandeya Purana provide the foundational scale:
· Nimesha: The time taken for a blink of the eye.
· Kshana: 3 Nimeshas (according to Markandeya Purana) or 15 Nimeshas (Vishnu Purana).
· Kashtha: 15 Nimeshas.
· Kala: 30 Kashthas.
· Muhurta: 30 Kalas (approximately 48 minutes).
· Ahoratra (Day & Night): 30 Muhurtas. From here, the human calendar is established:
· Paksha (Fortnight): 15 Day-Nights.
· Maasa (Month): 2 Pakshas.
· Ayana: 6 Months.
· Varsha (Year): 2 Ayanas.📅 The Divine and Pitr Years
A crucial conversion bridges human and divine time: one human year equals one single day and night of the gods (Devas). Since the gods have 360 such days in their year, a Divine Year (Divya Varsha) equals 360 human years. Separately, the Pitrs (ancestors) have their own scale, where one of their years equals 360 human months (30 human years).
🕉️ The Four Yugas (The Mahayuga)
A Mahayuga (Great Age) is a cycle of four Yugas, lasting a total of 12,000 divine years. Each Yuga has a main period and a twilight (Sandhya/Sandhyamsha) period.
· Satya (Krita) Yuga: 4,000 divine years (main period) + 400 (Sandhya) + 400 (Sandhyamsha) = 4,800 divine years.
· Treta Yuga: 3,000 + 300 + 300 = 3,600 divine years.
· Dvapara Yuga: 2,000 + 200 + 200 = 2,400 divine years.
· Kali Yuga: 1,000 + 100 + 100 = 1,200 divine years.In human years, one Mahayuga equals 4.32 million years.
🌍 The Manvantara: The Reign of a Manu
A Manvantara is the period of one Manu (progenitor of humanity). The Vishnu Purana states it is equal to 71 Mahayugas, with some additional years. This is calculated as:
· Divine Years: 71 × 12,000 = 852,000 divine years (plus the additional Sandhya periods).
· Human Years: 306,720,000 years (approx. 306.72 million). At the end of each Manvantara, there is a partial dissolution, and a new Manu, Indra, and Sapta Rishis are appointed.
🌌 The Kalpa: A Day of Brahma
A Kalpa is a single day of Brahma. It consists of 1,000 Mahayugas and encompasses 14 Manvantaras.
· Human Years: 1,000 × 4.32 million = 4.32 billion years.
Brahma’s night (Pralaya) is of equal duration (4.32 billion years), during which the universe is dissolved. A full day-night cycle of Brahma is therefore 8.64 billion years. The current Kalpa is the Varaha Kalpa.
🔄 The Life of Brahma and the Grand Cycle
Brahma lives for 100 divine years, where each year is composed of 360 such days and nights (Kalpas).
· One year of Brahma: 360 × 8.64 billion = 3.11 trillion years.
· Lifespan of Brahma (Maha Kalpa): 100 × 3.11 trillion = 311.04 trillion years. The scriptures state that 51 years of Brahma’s life have already elapsed, and we are currently in the first day of his 51st year, in the Varaha Kalpa, during the Vaivasvata Manvantara.
Vaivasvata Manu is the reigning manu of this cycle .His story is explained in detail in Matsya Puran . -
