According to the Puranas, the month of Sawan (Shravan) is considered supremely dear to Lord Shiva for several profound reasons, each rooted in ancient legends and cosmic order.

🥛 The Legend of Samudra Manthan and the Halahala Poison

The most prominent reason is the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), which is believed to have taken place during the month of Sawan. During this event, the deadly Halahala poison emerged, threatening to destroy all creation. Lord Shiva consumed this poison to save the world and held it in his throat, which turned blue, earning him the name Neelkantha.

To cool the burning effect of the poison, the gods offered holy water from the Ganges to Shiva. This is why offering water (Jalabhishek) to a Shivalinga is considered especially auspicious during Sawan.

💍 Parvati’s Penance to Attain Shiva

The Skanda Purana and Shiva Purana narrate that Goddess Parvati undertook rigorous penance and fasting during the month of Sawan to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Impressed by her devotion, Shiva accepted her. This legend makes Sawan a highly auspicious time for unmarried girls seeking a good partner and for married women praying for marital bliss.

👑 Shiva as the Presiding Deity of the Month

The Shiva Purana states that among all twelve months, Shravan is the dearest to Lord Shiva. During this month, Lord Shiva is believed to descend to Earth and reside here to bless his devotees. It is also the first month of Chaturmas, during which Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra and Shiva takes charge of governing the universe.

🌧️ The Season of Prakriti (Nature) in Full Glory

Sawan marks the peak of the monsoon. Nature (Prakriti), which is considered a manifestation of Goddess Parvati, flourishes in her full glory during this month. This abundance of water, greenery, and sacred flowers like Belpatra, Dhatura, and Aak makes it the ideal time for Rudrabhishek and other Shiva rituals. It is said that worship during Sawan is 108 times more powerful than at other times.

    · Shiva Tandava: The Skanda Purana states that Lord Shiva performs the Tandava dance on Kailash during the Pradosh period on Trayodashi Tithi of Sawan.Bramhapralaya happens in this very tithi in every kalpa.
    · Markandeya’s Boon: Sage Markandeya attained the boon of long life by worshipping Shiva during Sawan.

In essence, Sawan is special to Shiva because it commemorates his supreme sacrifice (drinking the poison), his union with Parvati (who did penance in this month), and his cosmic role as the presiding deity who descends to Earth during this sacred period.
