Markandeya Purana is one of the 18 holy Puranas of Hinduism. Maharishi Markandeya Rishi is the author of Markandeya Purana. This Purana was first narrated by Markandeya Rishi to Kroshthi, hence this Purana is known as Markandeya Purana. Markandeya Purana has got seventh place in the index of Puranas.

In the Markandeya Purana, like the Rigveda, there is research on gods like Indra, Surya, Agni, Vayu, Chandra, etc. The glory of Bhagwati has been described in detail in this Purana. In the Markandeya Purana, a detailed description of the stories is found, such as the story of Dattatreya-Charitra, the story of Atri-Anusuya, the story of Durga Saptashati, the story of King Harishchandra, etc. In this Purana, the character of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati, these three goddesses have been described in detail.


The Markandeya Purana is the smallest in size among all the Puranas. There are 137 chapters and 9000 verses in this Purana. Maharishi Jaimini is the speaker from the 1st to the 42nd chapter, the dharma birds are the ones who listen to him. The speaker of chapters 43 to 90 is Maharishi Markandeya Rishi, who listens to him are Kryptukis. The name of this Purana is derived from the statement of Markandeya Rishi.

In this Purana, the sage Markandeya has well known for moral, spiritual, social, and material matters for the welfare of human beings. In this Purana, Markandeya Rishi has revealed the splendor and beauty of India arising out of nature.


In the Markandeya Purana, all religions have been well explained by religion birds by making religious birds the authority of discourse. First of all, in this Purana, Jaimini’s teaching is in front of Markandeya Rishi. Then the story of the birds of religion has been described. Later the story of his previous birth has also been told.

In the Markandeya Purana, there is a statement about getting cursed because of Indra Dev. Thereafter, the pilgrimage of Balabhadraji, the story of the five sons of Draupadi, the virtuous story of King Harishchandra, the battle between the eagle and the buck birds, the story of the father and the son, the story of Dattatreya, the great story, the story of Madalasa, the virtuous description of nine types of creation. , the instructions of the Kalpant period, the representation of the Yaksha-creation, the creation of Rudra, etc., the description of the island, the chanting of many sin-destroying stories of Manus, and among them is the story of Durgaji giving immense virtue, which is described in the context of the eighth Manvantara.

In this Purana, the story of the birth of Sun God describes the origin of the Omkar mantra of all three Vedas. The character of Markandeya Rishi and the fruits of listening to the Puranas are all explained in detail in the Markandeya Purana.


In the Markandeya Purana, the importance of Papanasani virtuous Chandi Devi has been described in detail. This Purana is also called Shakta Granth. The complete description of Durga Saptashati is found in the Markandeya Purana itself. The recitation of Durga Saptashati is revered by all the people of the Hindu religion.

Markandeya Purana is full of legends, anecdotes, and stories. The most compassionate and pathetic context in this Purana is the story of King Harichandra. In order to fulfill a promise, Harichandra sold his kingdom, opulence, and also his wife and son. Raj Harichandra himself started working as a Chandal in the crematorium only because the Dakshina of Rishi Vishwamitra had to be completed.

By listening to such holy Puranas one becomes free from all sins and attains Dharma, Kama, Artha, and Moksha.
