कहत अयोध्यादास तुम, देहु अभय वरदान ॥
अर्थ:
हे गिरिजा पुत्र श्री गणेश आपकी जय हो। आप मंगलकारी हो, विद्वता के दाता हो,
अयोध्यादास प्रार्थना करते है प्रभु कि आप ऐसा वरदान दें जिससे सारे भय नष्ट हो जांए।
॥ चौपाई ॥
जय गिरिजा पति दीन दयाला ।
सदा करत सन्तन प्रतिपाला ॥
अर्थ:
हे गिरिजा पति हे, दीन हीन पर दया करने वाले भगवान आशुतोष आपकी जय हो,
आप निरंतर संतो के रक्षक रहे हैं।
भाल चन्द्रमा सोहत नीके ।
कानन कुण्डल नागफनी के ॥
अर्थ:
हे महादेव आपके मस्तक पर अर्ध चंद्रमा शोभायमान है, आपने कानों में
नागफनी के कुंडल शोभायमान् हैं।
अंग गौर शिर गंग बहाये ।
मुण्डमाल तन क्षार लगाए ॥
अर्थ:
हे भगवान शिव आपका रंग गौर वर्ण का है, आपकी जटाओं से गंगाजी बहती है,
आपके गले में मुंडमाल है, और शरीर पर भस्म है।

वस्त्र खाल बाघम्बर सोहे ।
छवि को देखि नाग मन मोहे ॥
अर्थ:
आपके तन पर बाघ की खाल के वस्त्र भी हैं। आपकी छविसुंदरता को देख कर नाग
भी प्रभावित होते हैं।
मैना मातु की हवे दुलारी ।
बाम अंग सोहत छवि न्यारी ॥
अर्थ:
मैनावंती की लाड़ली अर्थात माता पार्वती जी आपके बांये अंग में हैं, उनकी शोभा भी
अलग से मन को प्रसन्नमय करती है।
कर त्रिशूल सोहत छवि भारी ।
करत सदा शत्रुन क्षयकारी ॥
अर्थ:
हे शिव शंकर आपके हाथों में त्रिशूल आपकी सुंदरता को और भी मोहित
करनेवाला है, आपने सर्वदा शत्रुओं का विनाश किया है।
नन्दि गणेश सोहै तहँ कैसे ।
सागर मध्य कमल हैं जैसे ॥
अर्थ:
हे महादेव आपके सान्निध्य में नंदी और गणेश इतने सुन्दर लगते हे, जैसे सागर
के बीच खिले कमल के समान दिखाई पड़ते हैं।
कार्तिक श्याम और गणराऊ ।
या छवि को कहि जात न काऊ ॥
अर्थ:
कार्तिकेय व अन्य गणों के विद्यमानता से आपकी सुंदरता बढ़ जाती हे, जिसका
गुण कथन कोई कर नहीं सकता।
देवन जबहीं जाय पुकारा ।
तब ही दुख प्रभु आप निवारा ॥
अर्थ:
हे भगवन शिव, देवी-देवताओं ने जब भी आप का स्मरण किया है, अपने तुरंत ही
उनके संकट का निवारण किया है।
किया उपद्रव तारक भारी ।
देवन सब मिलि तुमहिं जुहारी ॥
अर्थ:
ताड़कासुर जैसे राक्षस के तरह-तरह के उपद्रव से परेशान देवतागण ने जब
आपकी शरण ली, रक्षा के लिए पुकार लगाई।
तुरत षडानन आप पठायउ ।
लवनिमेष महँ मारि गिरायउ ॥
अर्थ:
हे शिव शंकर देवताओें की प्रार्थना से आपने तुरंत तरकासुर को मारने के लिए
स्वामी कार्तिकेय को भेजा और आपकी दी हुयी शक्ति से राक्षस वध किया।
आप जलंधर असुर संहारा ।
सुयश तुम्हार विदित संसारा ॥
अर्थ:
आपने ही जलंधर नामक भयंकर असुर का संहार किया। उससे आपका जो
कल्याणकारी यश फैला वह पूरा संसार जानता है।
त्रिपुरासुर सन युद्ध मचाई ।
सबहिं कृपा कर लीन बचाई ॥
अर्थ:
हे शिव शंकर आपने त्रिपुरसुर नामक भयंकर राक्षस से युद्ध करके उनका संहार
किया सभी देवताओं पर कृपा की और उनको बचा लिया।
किया तपहिं भागीरथ भारी ।
पुरब प्रतिज्ञा तासु पुरारी ॥
अर्थ:
हे भोलेनाथ गंगाजी को पृथ्वी पर लाने के लिए भगीरथ के महान तप किया तब आपने
प्रसन्न हो कर अपनी जटाओं से गंगा की धारा को छोड़कर उनकी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी की थी।
दानिन महँ तुम सम कोउ नाहीं ।
सेवक स्तुति करत सदाहीं ॥
अर्थ:
हे प्रभू इस संसार के सभी दानियों में आपके समान बड़ा दानी कोई नहीं है, भक्त
आपकी सदा से वन्दना करते आए हैं।
वेद नाम महिमा तव गाई।
अकथ अनादि भेद नहिं पाई ॥
अर्थ:
हे प्रभु आपका अनादि होने का भेद सिर्फ आप ही जानते हैं, आपके बारे में वर्णन नहीं
किया जा सकता है, आप अकथ हैं। वेदों में भी आपके नाम की महिमा गाई गई है।
प्रकटी उदधि मंथन में ज्वाला ।
जरत सुरासुर भए विहाला ॥
अर्थ:
हे प्रभु जब क्षीर सागर समुद्र का मंथन हो रहा था तब मंथन में विष से भरा घड़ा
निकला तो समस्त देवतागण और दानव भय से व्याकुल हो उठे।

कीन्ही दया तहं करी सहाई ।
नीलकण्ठ तब नाम कहाई ॥
अर्थ:
हे प्रभु आपने ही उनकी सहायता के लिए विष को अपने कंठ में धारण किया जिससे
आपको “नीलकंठ“ कहा जाने लगा।
पूजन रामचन्द्र जब कीन्हा ।
जीत के लंक विभीषण दीन्हा ॥
अर्थ:
हे शिव शंकर आपकी पूजा करके ही श्री रामचंद्र ने आपकी कृपा से ही उन्होंने
लंका पर विजय प्राप्त की लंका को जीत कर उसे विभीषण को
लंका का राजा बना दिया।
सहस कमल में हो रहे धारी ।
कीन्ह परीक्षा तबहिं पुरारी ॥
अर्थ:
जब श्री राम सहस्त्र कमलों द्वारा मां शक्ति की पूजा कर रहे थे और सेवा में कमल
अर्पण कर रहे थे, तो हे भोलेनाथ! अपनी माया के प्रभाव से उनकी परीक्षा ली।
एक कमल प्रभु राखेउ जोई ।
कमल नयन पूजन चहं सोई ॥
अर्थ:
जब मां ने एक कमल को छुपा लिया। अपनी पूजा को पूरा करने के लिए राजीवनयन
भगवान राम ने, कमल की जगह अपनी आंख से पूजा संपन्न करने की ठानी।
कठिन भक्ति देखी प्रभु शंकर ।
भए प्रसन्न दिए इच्छित वर ॥
अर्थ:
श्री राम की ऐसी कठिन भक्ति देखकर आप प्रसन्न हुए और उन्हें मनवांछित वर
प्रदान किया।
जय जय जय अनन्त अविनाशी ।
करत कृपा सब के घटवासी ॥
अर्थ:
हे अनंत अविनाशी भगवान भोलेनाथ, सब पर कृपा करने वाले, सबके घट में
वास करने वाले भोलेनाथ, आपकी जय हो।
दुष्ट सकल नित मोहि सतावै ।
भ्रमत रहौं मोहि चैन न आवै ॥
अर्थ:
हे प्रभु काम, क्रोध, मोह, लोभ, अंहकार जैसे तमाम दुष्ट मुझे सताते रहते हैं। इन्होंनें
मुझे भ्रम में डाल दिया है, इसलिए मुझे क्षणमात्र भी चैन नहीं मिलता।
त्राहि त्राहि मैं नाथ पुकारो ।
येहि अवसर मोहि आन उबारो ॥
अर्थ:
हे स्वामी! बस मैं इन चीजों से ही तंग होकर आपकी शरण में आया हूं। इस संकट के
समय आप ही मेरा उद्धार कर सकते हैं।
लै त्रिशूल शत्रुन को मारो ।
संकट से मोहि आन उबारो ॥
अर्थ:
अपने त्रिशुल से इन तमाम दुष्टों का नाश करें और मुझे इन कष्टों से मुक्ति दिलाओ।
मात-पिता भ्राता सब होई ।
संकट में पूछत नहिं कोई ॥
अर्थ:
माता-पिता और भाई इत्यादि सम्बन्धी सब सुख में ही साथी होते हैं, लेकिन संकट
पड़ने पर कोई भी साथ नहीं देता।
स्वामी एक है आस तुम्हारी ।
आय हरहु मम संकट भारी ॥
अर्थ:
हे संसार के स्वामी! आप ही ऐसे हैं जिस पर मुझे उम्मीद लगी है। आप ही शीघ्र आकर
मेरे इस घोर संकट को हर लो।
धन निर्धन को देत सदा हीं ।
जो कोई जांचे सो फल पाहीं ॥
अर्थ:
आपने सदा निर्धन को धन दिया है उनकी सहायता करते हैं। जो कोई मनुष्य आपकी
जैसी भक्ति करता है वैसा ही फल उसे प्राप्त करता है।
अस्तुति केहि विधि करैं तुम्हारी ।
क्षमहु नाथ अब चूक हमारी ॥
अर्थ:
हम अज्ञानी आपकी स्तुति, आपकी प्रार्थना किस विधि से करें है प्रभु, अगर
आपकी पूजा करने में कोई चूक हुई हो तो हे भोलेनाथ, हमें माफ कर दीजिएगा।
शंकर हो संकट के नाशन ।
मंगल कारण विघ्न विनाशन ॥
अर्थ:
हे शिव शंकर भोलेनाथ! आप ही तो संकटों का नाश करने वाले हे, भक्तों का
कल्याण और सारे शुभ काम आपका नाम लेने से पूरे हो जाते हैं।

योगी यति मुनि ध्यान लगावैं ।
शारद नारद शीश नवावैं ॥
अर्थ:
योगी यति ऋषि मुनिजन सभी आपका ध्यान करते हैं। नारद और माता सरस्वती
सभी आपको शीश नवाते हैं।
नमो नमो जय नमः शिवाय ।
सुर ब्रह्मादिक पार न पाय ॥
अर्थ:
हे भोलेनाथ आपके जप का मूल श्लोक “ऊं नमः शिवाय“ है। इस मन्त्र का जप करके
भी ब्रह्मा आदि देवतागण आपका पार नहीं पा सके।
जो यह पाठ करे मन लाई ।
ता पर होत है शम्भु सहाई ॥
अर्थ:
जो प्राणी इस शिव चालीसा का पाठ मन लगाकर निष्ठा से करता है शिव शम्भु अवश्य
ही उसकी सहायता करते हैं।
ॠनियां जो कोई हो अधिकारी ।
पाठ करे सो पावन हारी ॥
अर्थ:
जो कोई कर्ज के बोझ से दबा हुआ हो, वह अगर पवित्र मन से आपके इस पाठ को
करे तो शीघ्र ही वह ऋण के से मुक्त हो जायेगा है।
पुत्र हीन कर इच्छा जोई ।
निश्चय शिव प्रसाद तेहि होई ॥
अर्थ:
संतान हीन व्यक्ति यदि संतान-प्राप्ति की इच्छा से इसका पाठ करेगा तो निश्चय ही
शिव की कृपा से उसे संतान प्राप्त होगा।
पण्डित त्रयोदशी को लावे ।
ध्यान पूर्वक होम करावे ॥
अर्थ:
प्रत्येक मास की त्रयोदशी (चंद्रमास का तेरहवां दिन त्रयोदशी कहलाता है, हर चंद्रमास
में दो त्रयोदशी आती हैं, एक कृष्ण पक्ष में व एक शुक्ल पक्ष में) को घर पर पण्डित को
बुलाकर श्रद्धापूर्वक पूजन व हवन करवाना चाहिए।
त्रयोदशी व्रत करै हमेशा ।
ताके तन नहीं रहै कलेशा ॥
अर्थ:
जो कोई प्राणी प्रत्येक त्रयोदशी को व्रत व्रत रखने से उसके किसी भी प्रकार के क्लेश
की भावना भी उसके मन में नहीं आती।
धूप दीप नैवेद्य चढ़ावे ।
शंकर सम्मुख पाठ सुनावे ॥
अर्थ:
जो कोई भी धूप, दीप और नैवेद्य से पूजन करके भगवान शिवजी की मूर्ति के सामने
बैठकर यह पाठ करना चाहिए।
जन्म जन्म के पाप नसावे ।
अन्त धाम शिवपुर में पावे ॥
अर्थ:
शिव चालीसा का पाठ करने से भगवान भोलेनाथ उसके जन्म-जन्मांतर के पापों
का नष्ट कर देते हैं। अंतकाल में आत्मा भगवान शिवलोक की प्राप्ति होती है,
उसे मोक्ष मिलता है।
कहैं अयोध्यादास आस तुम्हारी ।
जानि सकल दुःख हरहु हमारी ॥
अर्थ:
अयोध्या दास जी कहते हैं कि हे शिवजी! हमें आपकी ही आशा है। समस्त दुःखों को
दूर करके हमारी मनोकामना पूर्ण करें।
॥ दोहा ॥
नित्त नेम कर प्रातः ही, पाठ करौं चालीसा ।
तुम मेरी मनोकामना, पूर्ण करो जगदीश ॥
अर्थ:
हर रोज प्रातःकाल नित्यकर्म के पश्चात् शिव चालीसा का पाठ करें और भगवान
भोलेनाथ अपनी मनोकामना पूरी करने की प्रार्थना करें।
मगसर छठि हेमन्त ॠतु, संवत चौसठ जान ।
अस्तुति चालीसा शिवहि, पूर्ण कीन कल्याण ॥

मार्गशीर्ष मास की छठी तिथि हेमंत ऋतु संवत 64 और के समय में भगवान शिव की
