Story of Shakti Peeth: –

According to the Puranas, the story of 51 Shakti peeth is that King Prajapati Daksha was performing the Brihaspati Sarva Yagya in Kankhal (Haridwar). King Prajapati Daksha invited Brahma, Vishnu, Indradi, and all the deities in this yagya, but did not invite Lord Shiva.

Mata Sati came to know about this Yagya of King Daksha from Naradji that her father was going to perform Yagya but had not invited her. Knowing this, Goddess Sati got angry. Naradji said that no invitation is needed to visit Father’s place.

Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva and daughter of King Prajapati Daksha, arrived at the Kankhal Yagya site even though she was not invited by her father. Sati protested fiercely to her father and asked her father King Daksha the reason for not inviting Lord Shiva.

In this talk of Sati, King Daksha abused Lord Shiva and insulted Lord Shiva. Sati could not listen to these derogatory words about her husband and Goddess Sati sacrificed her life by jumping into the yajna-fire pit. When Lord Shiva came to know about this accident, his third eye opened with anger and took the incarnation of Virbhadra.

Veerbhadra, an incarnation of Lord Shiva Shankar, destroyed King Daksha’s Yajna and killed King Daksha by separating his head from his torso. Then at the behest of all the gods and goddesses, Lord Shiva made King Daksha alive by applying the head of a goat.

Lord Shiva carried the lifeless body of Sati on his shoulder and wandered in mourning throughout the universe. Finally, the other gods persuade him to lay his body on the ground and rest. However, Lord Shiva out of grief started performing a cosmic dance called Tandava.

To save the universe from the wrath of Shiva, Lord Vishnu cut the body of Goddess Sati with his Sudarshan Chakra to divide Sati’s body into pieces. The place where these pieces fell was called Shaktipeeth. Each piece fell on the earth at a different place and became a Shakti Peeth (51 Shakti Peeth), a place where Goddess Shakti is worshipped.
