Shri Garga Samhita in English

Shri Garga Samhita (Garga Samhita in English) is a sacred text in Hinduism, specifically belonging to the Puranic genre. It is attributed to Sage Garga, who was a revered sage in Hindu mythology and was known for his profound knowledge of astrology, astronomy, and the Vedas.

Shri Garga Samhita focuses primarily on the life and pastimes of Lord Krishna, one of the major deities in Hinduism and a figure in the Mahakavya Mahabharata. It contains dialogues and discourses and various stories, teachings related to Krishna’s childhood, youth, and adult life, providing devotees with a profound insight into his divine nature and teachings. Shri Garga Samhita mainly contains extensive descriptions of Krishna’s pastimes, including his childhood exploits, interactions with devotees, and the divine Raasleela (leela) in Vrindavan with Radha and the gopis.

Like many Puranic texts, Garga Samhita has a devotional tone and is considered sacred by followers of the bhakti (devotion) tradition. It emphasizes the love and devotion of devotees towards Lord Krishna. Various manuscripts and versions of the Garga Samhita exist, and they may have some variations in content. The text is written in Sanskrit, and translations into various languages have been attempted over the years.

The Shri Garga Samhita (Garga Samhita in English) is divided into various sections or chapters, each of which deals with different aspects of Krishna’s life and teachings. It is revered by Vaishnavas, followers of the Vishnu tradition within Hinduism, and is often recited, studied, and revered in temples and homes in India and beyond.

The Shri Garga Samhita (Garga Samhita in English) is the work of Mahamuni Shri Garg, the great Acharya of the Yaduvansh. This entire Samhita is replete with extremely sweet Krishna leelas. It contains detailed descriptions of the divine melody-mixed leelas of Shri Radha. What is stated in the Srimad Bhagavatam as sutras is described in the Garga Samhitas as detailed vrittis. In a sense, it is a Mahabhashya of the Krishna lila described in the Srimad Bhagavatam. In Shrimad Bhagwat, Maharishi Vyas has said ‘Krishnastu Bhagwan Swayam’ – this much in relation to the perfection of Lord Krishna, Mahamuni Gargacharya has said –

यस्मिन् सर्वाणि तेजांसि विलीयन्ते स्वतेजसि ।
तं वदन्ति परे साक्षात् परिपूर्णतमं स्वयम् ।।

Yasmin sarvaani tejansi viliyante swatejasi.
Tan vadanti pare satshat perfectatam swayam.
By saying – by describing the entry of all the divine radiance in Shri Krishna, the completeness of Shri Krishna has been described.

Madhurleela of Shri Krishna has been created by divine ‘rasa’; There has been light in that juice. In Srimad Bhagwat, that Rasa has been described only once in five chapters; But in this Garga Samhita, there is a very beautiful description of him three times in many chapters, in Vrindavankhand, at the time of joining the light of Ashvamedhkhand and at the time of returning after the victory of Digvijaya of the same Ashvamedhkhand. Due to the divine attraction of Shri Radhaji, the embodiment of supreme love, eternally integral to Shri Krishna, Shri Mathuranath and Shri Krishna, the presiding deity of Shri Dwar, repeatedly visited Gokul and performed the divine Leela of Maharas with Nityaraseshwari, Nityanikunjeshwari – there is a detailed description of this. In its Madhurya section, there is a very beautiful description of the previous births of various Gopis. There are many more new stories.

This code is an object of utmost respect for devotees and devotees; Because it clearly mentions the esoteric elements of Srimad Bhagwat. It is hoped that the readers of ‘Kalyan’ will take special benefit from this.
